There used to be a huge playground in Hatibagan in the erstwhile address of single screens like Sree and Uttara. The ground was called Hegodangar Math. Later, it became a favourite with circus owners who put up their tents there. Taking cue from this, the Madan Company jumped into the fray there and started to screen movies in tents. One of those tents was converted into a stage in 1921. It was named as the Cornwallis Theatre. Alongside plays, Madan’s inhouse film productions used to be screened there too. Between 1926 and 1930, Sisir Kumar Bhaduri used to run this stage as Natyamandir. Later, it transformed into the Sree cinema.
