Rabindranath Tagore had named this cinema as Rupabani. He had inaugurated it too. But there was no screening on the inaugural day. Film screening began a week later. The famous Nan family was the founder of this cinema. This was the first cinema founded by the famous business family of north Kolkata. Land was taken on lease from the Shovabazar Rajbari. The organization was called Screen Corporation Limited. Its members were Sudhirchandra Nan, Prabhashchandra Nan, Prakashchandra Nan, Paris Collapsible Gate Company’s Rabindranath Dutta and National Dye and Waterproof Workers’ Manoranjan Ghosh. Prakashchandra Nan took charge when the organization became a private limited company in 1938. Later, two other cinemas built by them got clubbed to form the Rupabani-Aruna-Bharati chain.
